Facility Enhancements

HONORING OUR HERITAGE

Baltimore Lab School resides in the original Goucher College building, which was first built in 1888. Originally named the Woman's College of Baltimore City in 1890, John and Mary Fisher Goucher deeded the college the land on which to build its original campus in downtown Baltimore. The college was renamed after the Gouchers in 1910. The building in which most of the BLS classrooms and students work each day is called Old Goucher Hall.

Over the decades, Old Goucher Hall has been a college, a Red Cross, a language center, and administrative offices. In 2000, Sally L. Smith founded Baltimore Lab School, and the school has been housed in the building since 2004. Our building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 and remains protected.[1] It was designed by the nationally famous architect Stanford White.[2]

With approximately 40,000 square feet of space, the school was updated with new windows, gutters, downspouts, LED lighting, and air conditioning in 2018. With no two rooms of the same size or configuration, the uniqueness of the building makes the environment very exciting and engaging. However, in order to ensure general maintenance, like heating, air conditioning, ventilation, slate roof repairs, elevator upgrades, and carpeting/flooring improvements, there is a need to ensure that our annual fund can support the preservation of such a significant architectural gem in Baltimore.
