Who We Serve

Baltimore Lab School educates students with learning disabilities and/or ADHD in grades 1-12.  Students can be parentally placed or publicly funded by their local school system.  BLS is a nonpublic special education school approved by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE).

Students with learning disabilities are bright – many are exceptionally intelligent. Because of the way their brains are wired, they process academic material differently from their peers. This neurological difference makes it difficult to learn information that’s presented in a conventional manner. Although learning difficulties manifest most apparently in the classroom, their impact stretches well beyond academics. Left undiagnosed or untreated, learning disabilities can erode self-confidence and hamper the social development of a young person. This presents challenges for children – and the families that love them.

At Baltimore Lab School, we know that every child can learn. Our role is to tap into your child's academic talents and discover how they learn best. With our non-traditional teaching methods and our innovative strategies, we help students enhance their academic strengths, understand their learning disabilities, self-advocate with confidence, and prepare for a rewarding pathway after graduation.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Learning disabilities are common. According to the National Institutes of Health, 15% of Americans have a learning difficulty of some nature.
  • Learning difficulties tend to run in families.
  • The most common learning disabilities are language-based, making reading, writing, and spelling difficult. Approximately 80% of students with learning disabilities find reading a challenge.
  • Difficulty with sensory-motor integration, motor planning, and coordination, and executive functioning are common side effects of learning disabilities.
  • Attention disorders, such as ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) and ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), are not learning disabilities, although they frequently occur in tandem with learning disabilities.
